Rik Mayall – a true comic creative genius – was today laid to rest, sadly what feels like all too soon.
Rik created many characters but, for me, his namesake student in “The Young Ones” will always be the greatest. As a child, in the days before VCRs, I would painstakingly record the show audios to cassette so that my friends and I could listen again and again – the laughs seeming to get funnier and funnier the more we heard them.
There are many strategies described for how to create great comedy, and yet “The Young Ones” seems to be a perfect example of how the best things get created “out of the blue”.
His comedy partner, Adrian Edmondson, said the following on learning of his sudden passing:
‘There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.
They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish b******.”
We can get so serious about the creative process, and yet it seems to me that many of the best things are created from a place of fun, and lightness – from that place the “out of the blue” moments happen with amazing regularity!
Rik – only a true comedy legend could fill me with such sadness your departing, whilst at the same time having me cry tears of laughter at the memories you created for me. You will be greatly missed.
